The team needs someone to build and maintain the parts of the product that people click on directly. Not the database, not the server logic underneath, the actual interface.
Day-to-day work

A layout that looks perfect in Figma sometimes falls apart the moment real content replaces the placeholder text. A product name that's four words longer than the design mockup assumed will break a card layout that wasn't built to flex. Catching that kind of gap before it ships, or fixing it fast once a user reports it, is a big part of what fills the week here.
What's needed
A bachelor's degree covers the education requirement. On the experience side, 18 months of hands-on work building responsive, user-facing web applications, ideally with something you can point to and say you built. A portfolio matters more here than in many engineering roles, since interface work is visible in a way backend code isn't.
Strong JavaScript is the foundation. HTML and CSS need to be second nature, not something you're still looking up. Experience with React or Vue is expected, along with real responsive design skills, Git for version control, comfort working against REST APIs, and enough browser debugging experience to track down a rendering bug that only shows up in one specific browser version.
A few extras help beyond that: some exposure to TypeScript, familiarity with accessibility standards like WCAG, and experience with a component library or design system rather than building every element from scratch each time.

What tends to surprise new hires
Browser inconsistency is still a real thing, even now. Something that renders cleanly in Chrome can behave oddly in Safari, and chasing down exactly why eats more time than most people expect walking in. It's not constant, but it's frequent enough that patience with that kind of debugging matters as much as raw coding speed.
Design feedback also sometimes arrives late, after a feature's mostly built, which means reworking a layout that already feels finished. That's not a sign the process is broken. It's closer to normal, and developers who take it personally tend to have a rougher time here than ones who treat it as part of the job.
